LOWEST SCORES OF THE YEAR!
August 23, 2011-By Don Nichols
It was another hot and sunny afternoon that saw 16 players take on the back nine, and judging by the team scores (the lowest of the year), this week’s match proved once again that the second trip around the Ansley Golf Club’s 9 hole course is not the same as the first time through. (Just ask last week’s Low Net winners Mike Schmal and William Thornton who followed their front nine scores of 37 and 39 with rounds of 46 and 51 on the back.)
7 UNDER CRUISES TO EASY VICTORY!
The second group off the tee–Jeff Kohn, Marty Arnold, Russ Jobson, and Ron Majors– easily tromped the field with a score of 7 under, while the last group to tee off–Mike Schmal, Doug Gooding, David Danzig, and Danzig quest Walt Phillips–limped in DAL to tie for the worst score of the year at 1 over par and to earn the “sucked more” title over the two other most grateful teams who barely managed to break par.
Final Results: Back Nine
Kohn, Arnold, Jobson, Majors -7
Reese, Thornton, Williamson, Nichols -2
Morris, Martin, Colbath, Player -1
Danzig, Phillips, Schmal, Gooding +1
Individual recognition goes to the following players:
BRAD REESE LOW GROSS AWARD: Ron Majors and Brad Reese: 40 Neither one of them played well but nobody else did either.
LOW NET WINNER: Russ Jobson -1 Ties for the worst low net in ATAG history but is good enough for the 21 handicapper to best the field. However, he violated the ATAG rule of “must be present to win.” ( More on this later.)
PINK LADY: David Danzig 54 Danzig continues to dominate, racking up two triples and five doubles to end up high atop the low end of the leaderboard for his 7th Pink Lady of the year.
BIRDIE CLUB: ARNOLD SAVES THE DAY! The Birdie Club narrowly avoided its first ever shut out thanks to the heroic efforts of 18 handicapper Marty Arnold who birdied the last hole to keep the Birdie Club alive and kicking.
COMMISSIONER’S CORNER (Observations Of The Commish)
- Though a couple of tables on the porch were occupied by non-ATAGers, Club management brought up extra chairs to accommodate the ATAG field so it turned out to be a night of separate table discussions while players dined on the chicken wings and consumed their favorite cold beverages.
- Low Net winner Russ Jobson left before the results of the match were announced, a definite “no-no” under the ATAG Code Of Conduct that automatically results in a citation. Not only did he miss out on the gratuitous Golden Ale, he is also subject to forfeiting his entitlement to the $16 low net purse from today’s match under the “must be present to win” ATAG policy. A quick poll of the players present revealed that a majority believed that Jobson should forfeit his bounty and that the purse should carry over to next week’s match. However, one ATAGer, in defense of Jobson, said that Jobson had to leave early to take care of his dog. (I’ve used that one myself whenever I want to get out of a place even though I don’t have a dog). The Commissioner, recognizing the serious nature of the offense and its effect on precedence, and also wanting to respect the wishes of the players, announced that he was going to retire to his chambers to give the matter serious consideration and would render his decision before next week’s match. (Jobson is not believed to be a subscriber to the ATAG Reporter, which may or may not have a bearing on the final ruling.)
- Mike Schmal also got on the Commissioner’s “Bad Boy” list for failing to even come up to the porch after his team finished DAL. And, while we are on the subject of ATAG miscreants, PJ Wade has not been heard from since being a “no notice, no show” for last week’s match. He is believed to be in hiding from the authorities.
That’s it for this week. Good luck to those ATAGers who are playing in this weekend’s Club Championship! Scroll down for individual scores from today’s match.

The writer failed to mention that core ATAGer Doug Healy made a cameo appearance on the porch even though being on the DL after injuring his wrist firing a 79 from the Settindown Blues last Saturday.
